Mrs. Mavis Opoku Okyere

Mrs. Mavis Opoku Okyere is a highly experienced Biomedical Scientist, Food Safety and Quality Management Expert, and quality systems professional with extensive expertise in blood transfusion services, laboratory quality assurance, food safety systems, and health services management. She currently serves as Quality Manager at the Southern Zonal Blood Centre of the National Blood Service, Ghana, where she provides strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and monitoring of robust quality management systems to ensure compliance with national and international standards. Her work plays a critical role in safeguarding public health through the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient transfusion services.

She is a Chief Biomedical Scientist with advanced professional training in Quality Management Systems, Quality Assessment in Blood Transfusion Services, and Food Safety and Quality Management. Over the years, she has made significant contributions to institutional quality improvement, accreditation processes, and regulatory complianceacross healthcare and allied service environments, supporting continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery.

Mrs. Opoku Okyere holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biological Sciences from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), obtained in 1997, and a Master of Philosophy degree in Medical Microbiology from the University of Ghana, awarded in 2011. She has further strengthened her leadership and management capacity through professional certifications in Health Administration and Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Total Quality Management from the Presbyterian University College, Ghana.

She is actively engaged in professional leadership and governance within the biomedical and transfusion medicine community. Mrs. Opoku Okyere is a member of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS)and serves as a Board Member of the Africa Society of Blood Transfusion (AfSBT). She also holds the position of ECOWAS Chairperson of AfSBT, is a member of the AfSBT Accreditation Committee, and functions as an Assessor and Educator for the Society. In addition, she contributes her expertise at the global level as a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Working Committee on Blood Safety.

In the area of research and knowledge dissemination, Mrs. Opoku Okyere is an author of several peer-reviewed publications. Her professional expertise and research interests span Food Safety and Quality Management, Blood Safety and Transfusion Medicine, Laboratory Quality Systems and Accreditation, Infection Prevention and Control, and Health Systems Strengthening and Regulatory Compliance. Through her research, leadership, and professional practice, she continues to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of quality, safety, and governance in health systems in Ghana and across the African region.
